PROCESS

My ceramic work combines both wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques. Initially, I combine different colored clay bodies together to form an overall agate-like appearance to the clay as I form it. I use the wheel to throw my mugs, bowls, bakeware and other cylindrical shapes. I use handbuilding methods to create all of my non-cylindrical forms. I then stamp and hand carve the pieces with a variety of designs and motifs. After these are allowed to dry completely, I bisque fire them. After unloading, I then paint underglazes into the impressions left by the stamps and carving and then wipe off the surface for an inlaid finish in the designs and patterns. I then paint approximately 2-3 layers of lead-free glaze, creating a depth and richness of color. Each piece is then fired in a kiln to cone 6 approx. 2232°F (1220°C). This high temperature allows me to achieve a high durability and an ability to withstand thermal shock in my functional work.
